Top rated prospects showcase talent
With so many different showcases now surrounding the state of Arizona, this year's 12th Annual Arizona Preps Fall Showcase proved that it is the best in the state at showcasing the best basketball talent the state has to offer.
While the Fall Showcase is only held annually, many other showcase events around the state of Arizona have developed over the past several years, claiming to provide recruiting opportunities while some event organizers have even shown unprofessionalism in their manner of recruiting players for their events.
Rather the original Fall Showcase by Arizona Preps has chosen to conduct business as usual in a professional manner, and, as a result, proved once again that the state's best basketball talent respects it's venue and appreciates the recruitment opportunities provided by the event.
Led by the play of Top 30 rated national prospect and Showcase Most Valuable Player Jahii Carson, this year's event was loaded with top-rated college prospects.
Here are just some of the individual top-rated college prospects from this year's event that were also categorized among the event's top performers . . .
Jahii Carson 5-10 SR PG Mesa HS - 2011 (Arizona State commit)
- Carson proved his national ranking as his play stood above the rest of the competition in this year's event. While Carson is fresh off a super spring and summer performance this off-season, he showed supreme class in this year's event by participating and playing at a high level throughout the tournament - also wining this year's Slam Dunk Competition. Carson has a bright future ahead of him, as he is already rated among the nation's elite prospects, and just may be the country's top true point guard prospect. I highly respected Carson after this year's event, as he showed excellent work ethic, played hard in each game and was an excellent teammate all weekend. Selected as this year's Tournament Most Valuable Player.
George Matthews 6-6 Prep SF Westwind Prep International - 2011 (Committed to Utah)
- Matthews continues to improve his overall ability to play the game through better attention to detail and much more focus overall as a player. He is a highly skilled offensive talent that makes the game look very easy on the offensive end of the floor, as he is able to score in a variety of ways - either inside or out. Active rebounder and a very good shotblocker. Excellent passer that sees the floor very well at his position on the floor. Matthews has a bright future ahead of him, as he will take his game to the PAC-10 next fall.
Collin Woods 6-2 SR PG/SG Horizon HS - 2011 (UC-Irvine commit)
- Woods had his best performance to date, as he was the tournament's leading scorer, alongside McClintock's Cameron Forte. Woods shot the ball in excellent fashion with unlimited range on his shot - proving that he has spent serious time in the gym since the summer. Woods is a high-scoring combo-guard that seems to like the shooting guard position much more at this point in his young career, but he has the work ethic to develop into a nice point guard prospect as well. Runner-up for this year's Tournament MVP honor.
Cameron Forte 6-6 SR SF McClintock HS - 2011
- Forte played as well as we have seen him play in a showcase event, as he played with a purpose and played to win in each game. He played with a very good motor and made strong plays throughout the event, ranking among the event's top individual scorers in the tournament. Still need to focus much more on the defensive end of the floor, as he could be a much better defender. Has the ability to become as good as he wants to become with continued hard work on his overall skillsets. Has a bright future and should put up tremendous numbers this high school season.
Jordan Baker 6-3 SR PG/SG Tempe HS - 2011 (Pepperdine commit)
- Baker is a fluid combo-guard that likes to score the basketball at a high rate, but is at his best when he is at the point guard position and can make plays for himself or others. He has a long, rangy frame that could benefit from more size and strength. A good passer with good court vision, although he trys to make the big play too often. After a strong spring and summer performance led him to an early fall commitment, he now needs to work hard to become consistent at playing at a high level. Bright future.
Sai Tummala 6-7 SR SF/PF Brophy Prep HS - 2011
- Tummala had his best showing of his career in this year's event. While he has slipped through the hands of many college programs this fall, Tummala has improved a great deal over the past two years and has a bright future ahead of him. He is a very skilled, athletic wing prospect that is capable of scoring on the low block or from the perimeter. He is also a good slasher and finisher in the open court. An active rebounder. A sleeper prospect that should garner a lot of attention this spring.
Larry Lewis 6-2 JR PG/SG Arcadia HS - 2012 (USC commit)
- Lewis is a highly productive prospect that makes plays on both ends of the floor at a high rate. An excellent scorer that possesses very good body control and is a very good finisher around the basket - is not bothered by physical contact. A very good shooter with range that has added very good consistency on his jump shot. Capable of playing both guard positions on the floor, and is a very good passer with good vision of the floor. A very good ball handler. A very good defender with excellent anticipation. Very good slasher and open court player. Good rebounder for his size. Has excellent upside for the future as he is very young for his class (just turned 16 years of age). Among the nation's best prospects in the 2012 class.
Tim Derksen 6-2 JR PG Amphitheater HS - 2012
- Derksen was his usual self in this year's event - making plays for himself and others without turning the basketball over and being very productive in the process. Derksen is a very good shooter with good range on his shot, and also a very good mid-range scorer that finishes very strong at the basket. An excellent athlete for his size with good lateral quickness. A very good finisher. Good slasher and open court player. Has an excellent attitude on and off the floor. A very good looking prospect with a bright future. One of the elite prospects in Arizona's 2012 class.
T.J. Burke 6-8 SR PF Marcos De Niza HS - 2011 (UC-Riverside commit)
- Burke loked much more like his usual self in this year's event, after a subpar summer performance. Burke has excellent upside and potential for the future, as he has very good size and agility to go with a variety of skillsets. I would like to see Burke dominate the low-post much more often, as he has good low post footwork and good bounce off the floor. Has a nice mid-range jump shot. More focus on the defensive end is needed to round out his potential, as he continues to mature into the collegiate level.
Marcus Fuggins 6-8 SR PF Westwind Prep Academy - 2011
- Fuggins has an excellent body and looks the part a great deal. He also has excellent upside for the future. He is a good low post scorer with an ability to face up out to three-point distance, but needs to become more consistent on his jump shot. He has OK hands but runs the floor very well. Good active rebounder and shotblocker that plays with good aggression. Considering a prep school year next year, which could lead to high major interest - if not he is a mid major low post prospect.
Ronald March 6-4 SR SF Thunderbird HS - 2011
- March was this year's best surprise performer of the event. A very skilled and talented wing prospect that knows how to play the game. March scores the basketball at a high rate and in a variety of ways, as he is a very good shooter of the basketball with range, and also a very good ball handler and passer. Possessing a very long and thin athletic build, March is a very versatile performer that produces numbers. His body could benefit a great deal from much more size and strength. An excellent sleeper prospect that should see his recruitment pick up steam after an excellent showing at this year's event.
Joe Boyd 6-7 SOPH PF Chaparral HS - 2013
- Boyd has really improved in his confidence level and approach to the game since last high school season. While it seems that a lot of recruiting attention has come to Boyd since last season, when he saw very limited action at the varsity level, Boyd has earned it through hard work and training efforts. Boyd is a very skilled face-up four man that is capable of stepping out past three-point distance and scoring the basketball with a nice shooting stroke. He also has excellent low post footwork that allows for him to be very effective around the basket area, as he is able to score with either hand. An active rebounder and a good finisher around the basket. Runs the floor very well. Good low post defender. Has a bright future ahead of him as he is among the very elite prospects in Arizona's 2013 class.
Billy Morrison 6-5 SR SF Rincon HS - 2011
- Morrison was one of the surprise top performers of the event, as he proved that he is among the state's very best overall talents. Morrison is a throw-back style performer that is very skilled offensively and plays both ends of the floor. He is very skilled on the wing or on the low block, where he possesses a variety of low post footwork and up-and-under moves that make him to difficult to defend. Good, active rebounder. Runs the floor very well. A definite sleeper prospect that knows how to play.
Danny Powell 6-6 JR SF/PF Desert Vista HS - 2012
- Powell is a power player that is very skilled and likes to score the basketball from the wing position or around the painted area. A tough, physical performer that enjoys contact and plays with good intensity on the floor. Has improved his athleticism a good deal, and looks much more agile these days with lost weight recently. An excellent rebounder. Good finisher. Will benefit from the leadership of Head Coach Dave Williams this high school season.
Bryan Rhymes 6-2 SR SG St. Mary's HS - 2011
Rhymes has improved a lot over the past two years, as he is no longer just a shooter, but now a good scorer with improved athleticism. Rhymes has a very good shooting stroke with unlimited range, and is also able to score off the dribble effectively in traffic where he is a good finisher. Solid ball handler and a capable passer. Should have a big scoring season for Head Coach David Lopez after sitting out as a junior per AIA transfer rules.
Jordan Didier 6-9 Prep PF Westwind Prep International - 2011
- Didier has improved his overall toughness and activity on the floor since the summer and it is beginning to pay dividends for him, as he is much more productive these days. A very skilled face-up four man, Didier can score from the wing position, where he has improved his perimeter shooting, or on the low block, where he gets to the foul line quite often. Needs to become more aggressive still rebounding the basketball on both ends of the floor. Has the potential to become a much better prospect with continued focus. Runs the floor very well and is a good finisher. Recently picked up two offers from Texas A&M Corpus-Christi and Ohio University.
Tyler Russell 6-0 SR PG Millennium HS - 2011

- Kirby had a very good event for himself. While he is still a work in progress as a prospect, he plays with excellent intensity and has excellent work ethic, allowing him to make plays. Keep balls alive on the offensive end with his long wingspan and excellent knack for the ball. A very good rebounder and shotblocker. Works hard to gain good inside position. Good low post scorer that is capable of stepping outside to the perimeter as well. Runs the floor very well. Will only get much better over time as he continues to mature as a player, but his upside is terrific as a player.
Stacy Davis 6-7 JR PF Tolleson HS - 2012
- Davis is a throw-back low post performer that has very good toughness and is a good low post scorer and finisher around the basket. He also possesses a solid mid-range jump shot and solid low post footwork. Active rebounder and runs the floor very well. Capable shotblocker. Has good athleticism. An inch taller would make him a sure-fire high major prospect, but he is definitely one of the better prospects in Arizona's 2012 class.
Andre Norris 6-5 JR SG/SF Chandler HS - 2012
- Norris had his best event of his young career, as he proved he is one of the better prospects in Arizona's 2012 class. Norris is an athletically gifted guard/wing prospect with an excellent motor and a good ability to make plays for himself and others. I was impressed in this year's event with his ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. Utilizes his athleticism to finish strong around the basket area, where he is an excellent finisher. Also a good shooter with range on his left-handed jump shot. Has nice body control as a player. An aggressive defender. Has a very bright future and is one of the elite prospects in Arizona's 2013 class.
Talbott Denny 6-6 JR SF/PF Salpointe HS - 2012
- Denny is a good looking prospect with a nice build and good overall toughness as a player. - Garcia was another one of the top surprise performers in thsi year's event. While he has flown well below the recruiting radar for some time, he is another ultra-talented prospect, much like that of former Pueblo HS star guard Mike Perez (UTEP signee) - the two share striking similarities as players. Garcia is a an athletic high-wire talent that scores in bunches and has an excellent shooting stroke with unlimited range on his shot. He is a very good open court player and slasher. A sleeper prospect for the mid-major division-I level.

Garcia is a an athletic high-wire talent that scores in bunches and has an excellent shooting stroke with unlimited range on his shot. He is a very good open court player and slasher. A tough prospect with good athleticism and a great knack for the ball. Braun has a very good physical build with excellent toughness. He has a very nice shooting stroke that he shoots with very good confidence and nice range. He is also a good scorer around the painted area of the floor, as he does not mind physical contact and gets to the free throw line. A very good rebounder with a good wingspan. A good defender. Possesses excellent work ethic and has good passion for the game.
