John, as I posted on your board a month ago and before the game tonight, that starting 5 that coach T put out the first two games just plain and simple cannot
shoot the ball and they will struggle to score. I think you said Thomason described the first half has pathetic and it absolutely was. 10 or 11 minutes
without a bucket, missed your first 7 free throws. 3 of your starting 5 are bad ft shooters. The rest of the Big West can only hope that starting lineup
stays put. Not trying to hate on Pacific, but anybody that's describing you all as front runners are crazy. Now, that's not to say Thomason won't
come up with a winning combination, but, Pacific's got work to do. First, Kamler is going to play, he almost has to given he's the only one that's
shooting the ball well. Second, as I've said before either Ford or Smith will have to go to the bench, I'm betting on Smith. In the first half
between Smith, Neufville and Ford they were o - fer from the floor and like 1-6 from the free throw line between the three of them. Now I know this is only
exhibition and maybe you can chalk it up to just a couple of bad games, but I saw this coming last spring. In the second half they got ALL there points on
transition layups which just isn't gonna happen against better competition. Right now this is a middle to bottom half team.

CDM, you definitely know what you're talking about. Finding someone (anyone) who can knock down a trey could be very flummoxing for Pacific this year. I
don't know who has picked the Tigers 1st in the BW, but I see a third-place team here (I'm assuming UCR might not be in the top 3) ... unless the best coach in the league works his magic, and some players really flourish. The Smith/Ford debate is a good one, though
for now, it seems like both will be starters. Smith is much more capable at putting the ball in the hoop than Ford. Ford can definitely score the rock from 2
feet and in, but beyond that, it's sketchy. Smith is also the better athlete -- some say the best pure athlete Pacific has ever had, others say the best
since Corey Anders (1994-98). But Ford is a defensive stalwart, who is long and gets boards over smaller defenders. In addition, Ford makes better decisions
with the pill than Smith (hell, Ford started several games at PG last year before Mike Kirby came off suspension). So, if the question is who should sit, I
suppose it comes down to free throws: Smith shot 76% last year. Ford was at a 56% clip.
I doubt it will come to that, but it's at least worth discussing. |

The lineup will undoubtedly be tinkered, I don't think that UOP has gone into a season with a determined starting lineup in quite some time, but I honestly
do think that in the mean time Coach T's biggest concern is that this team's defense will win the games. This year's D will be improved from last
years already quality defense and I think very few BW teams will score over 70 on the Tigers. Because of this focus I think that Ford has to stay a starter.
More important than the perimeter shooting for the Tigers is the FT shooting, it's going to have to be quality to get the offense to pull it's weight.
