CSF has about a 100,000 sq ft student rec center, funded by student fees in 04 or 05. Construction started in 06 and the rec center opened in 2008. Cost
about $42 mil.

UCSB Rec Cen 1&2 | #1 | ||
|
UCSB has 2 Rec Cens. The new Rec Cen or Rec Cen II or MAC is 55,000 Sq Ft. From a 3rd party website it looks like the 1st Rec Cen is 40,000 Sq Ft. I'm
guessing that doesn't include the 3 artificial turf soccer fields that were built maybe 5 years ago and the existing pools.
REC CEN 1: Pool A 50-meter x 25-yard x 30-meter "L" pool including a diving well featuring two 1-meter and two 3-meter diving boards. Pool temperature= 80° Pool B 25-yard pool with attached 0-3 foot depth teaching area and handicap access ramp. Main Gym Pavilion Gym-12,000 sq. ft. spring loaded floor Racquetball Courts (5) Squash Courts (2) Lobby Courtyard Garden Courtyard

UCI - ARC | #2 | ||
|
The ARC just completed an expansion. The overall square footage and cost is now around 110,000 sq. ft and $50 million. One thing that sets the ARC apart is
it accommodates both indoor and outdoor recreation. The ARC can be divided into 2 parts, the indoor facility aka gym and pool plus the outdoor intramural
fields. I think the surrounding fields and courts had a construction cost of $12 million.
Any facility that is 100,000 sq. ft. is HUGE. That's probably larger than the basketball venues. So it looks like the Big West schools can claim some large, expensive, 1st rate and state of the art rec centers that puts the regional gym facilities of national chains to shame. Not to mention the majority of people that use the Big West rec centers are college coeds.

I think most BW fans have been to UCR's student rec center, since that is where UCR hosts basketball games.
I think it is the oldest rec center in the BW. It would be great if UCR could play in the Pachenga Arena instead of the Student Rec Center. UCR should take a page from SDSU, and try to get an Indian tribe, from casino profits, to pay for the building of an arena. The Indian tribe in SD just paid for naming rights. But if Pachenga donated $25 mill for an arena, don't tell me UCR wouldn't accept it.

25 million might be a stretch, but I think you have a good idea. You UCR fans might wanna spin this idea.

Think we can get $25MM from the Puvunnga? How about if they build a casino on campus and funnel half their profits to athletics? Will that appease their
deceased alleged realtives souls? Should keep the living ones happy. But wait LBSU owns the land, not them. It sucks when 20% of your campus is not being
used now or planned to be used in the future.

Why are we discussing this. Summer slack time? Rec Centers and their size and cost have no bearing on athletics, except at UCR.

Hopefully this topic will be re-visited when all campus/athletic improvements have been made or at least most of them. Maxson said he wouldn't tie the
hands of any future presidents so hopefully this can be looked at again down the road. Would be nice to get that site and the VA too.

Do you know what they say about vengance in the Bible? It is not yours. Other than your anger and vengance, why are we discussing this subject? Note to JR -
I'm recussing from any further discussion on this thread.

LB's student rec center is over 31,000 more square feet than CSF's. It's gonna be head and shoulders above CSF's, inside and out. You are also
applying the square footage to the price tag which is wrong to do, because it's large "open" interior and furnishings will blow yours away.
LB's will be like a beachfront home with a great room, while CSF's is like a 800 sq. ft. fixer upper crack house in Detroit.
You have to pay for quality Skippy.

Watch out TC is the self-appointed board police keeping track of what people say and then bringing up non-relevant subjects to just to make a very minor point.
I believe it is called trolling with a purpose. I also think Jon Ralston exists at TC's pleasure! Please note that even though this is not written for
him, HE WILL RESPOND.
Have you seen CSUF's Rec Center? I haven't, just heard that it does not have an 'open ' design which makes it look and feel small. I ask again - why are we discussing this subject? I don't care what a Rec Center, anyone's, looks like or costs. |

Open that little delusional mind of your's and get a clue. You make a stupid statement and you're damn right I will respond. And you care about a rec center because you think it means more support for athletics, in other words you're drinking the Kool Aid that your pres is pouring. When it really means jack @!%#. If you don't care about a rec center, then why the hell are you even talking about it? A rec center has very little to do with athletic facilities since athletics have little to no access to them.

You are the most ill informed poster and more delusional than any, if you think a rec center won't help breed future donors( I also mean that literally, as
the place will be a meat market) You don't think anybody is gonna be in there promoting Beach athletics and getting people involved that otherwise
wouldn't. You don't think ladies are gonna be asked out on dates to games or vice versa, while on the treadmills that otherwise would never attend a
game and have the chance to get involved? This will be the best place on campus for future donors in the history of The Beach. Don't quit your day job of
flipping Jughead's favorite.
Also, the San Diego State Aztec Rec Center is even smaller than CSF's at only 76,000 sq. feet. Open that little delusional mind of yours. Admit it you we're wrong and that was a stupid statement to make, just admit it! ttp://www.sa.sdsu.edu/housing/conference/athletic-dimensions.htm

Rec Cen Atmospheres | #18 | ||
|
I have a fairly unique perspective right now with regards to Rec Cen "atmospheres." CSUB's Rec Cen was recently completed this Spring and
I'll be going back in the fall for more classes. I also graduated from UCSB as many on here already know. UCSB's Rec Cen is under the auspice of
Physical Activities and Recreation (or whatever the title is now). While CSUB's is more of a joint-venutre between ASI and the university.
UCSB's Rec Cen, because of the head person still in charge, is pretty anti-Athletics. Instead the focus is on the club sports, rec sports, and fitness in general for the students. Many would agree that this should and is the mission of all Rec Cen's in general. However, UCSB's Rec Cen is so anti-Athletics that they've considered kicking the water-polo games from their pool (which is the only regulation pool they can play at on campus) while the new pool is being considered. Granted, the Rec Cen has been nice to the Locos, cheerleading and the likes during club days etc. However, for as long as I can remember, they remain fairly opposed to any UCSB spirit (occasionally they'll have signs for games outside). That might have to deal more with the (if we promote one event, we have to equally promote other events as well) mantra. Since UCSB isn't a commuter school, the UCSB Rec Cen is probably 50% of the intended purpose of a commuter school Rec Cen. I.E. the commuter school Rec Cen is inteded as a hang-out spot and a reason to stay on-campus longer. Lastly, I recall several rec-sports games that would conflict with a sporting event. That's 200+ people on a given game that might norrmally attend an athletic event, but are out playing rec-sports. For UCSB, the Rec Center might be more of a distraction for Athletics than a tool / means of encouraging school spirit. CSUB's Rec Cen, will be more of an indicator for Long Beach and CSUN to gauge whether Rec Cen's are a distraction or a tool for Athletics. I went there during its opening, and I'll have a better feel this fall when I'm able to go back...but they at least had school colors and rally towels that said CSUB / Rec Center on them. The gym, climbing wall etc were fairly full when I first went, but I haven't been back since. I'm guessing that after 5 it'll be packed, and before some general class hours. All in all, people that normally wouldn't be on-campus I could tell were spending the some time there. I'll have to wait for this fall to see whether Athletics can exploit the increased on-campus presence for fall sports or if the Rec Cen is a distraction for athletic events. |

Rec Centers can and do keep kids on campus. But think about a commuter campus, by the time most athletic events start they are long gone.
A commuter kid has classes from 9am-1pm, then may go work out for an hour or two, then what? Think he is going to stay until 7pm for the game? Not happening, in large enough numbers to make it worthwhile. Rec Centers are like student unions, a much needed campus facility but has little affect on athletics. The goal of rec centers is to provide a place on campus for kids to work out and club sports to have a facility. The delusional LB fans need to stop drinking the Kool Aid a hick president from Kentucky is shoveling.

You're JEALUSIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would be too, if my rec center could fit in one small quarter of your rec center. For somebody that thinks talking about rec centers is a waste of time to athletics, you sure like continuing threads talking about FREAKIN REC CENTERS!!! U R JEALUSIONAL and you prove it with every response. You wanted us to grade rec centers and I grade LB's over Foolertons and you cry like a baby. Get over it or deal with it. Both are impossible for you it seems. By the way you still haven't admitted you were wrong, something else you can't do. |
