It was always thought that Todd's next coaching position would be at a Christian school. I did not see him going across the country for a D3 job. Good
Luck Todd! I hope it works out for him.

What was the primary reason for taking this job? Was it due to a deterioration of his relationship with coach Douglass or just a good opportunity? I don't
really see being a D3 head coach a step up from being the #1 assistant at a D1 program.

But, my gut sense is that he was looking for a situation where he can run a program at a religious school, which he believes (and is) a good environment for
raising his family. He has three little girls. I don't think given UCI's record, he was going to have too many opportunities to be a head coach. He
may have had an opportunity to become a head coach at a D2 next year, but I doubt a D1 job given our lack of success in recent years.

Bring on Reggie Theus!...if nothing, at least we would be able to attract some higher rated recruits....
I know its damn near impossible for us to get a somewhat-recognized coach, let alone Theus, but we need to make a move somehow. Maybe one of these ex-big name coaches realized some sort of potential in terms of what our athletic department and student body/facilities have to offer and jump on board? I doubt it, but it could happen.... |

Are there at least 10 posters (especially those who want to change) who would be willing to pledge at least $100,000 each per year to create the necessary
package to lure a "Big Name Coach"- When you collect those pledges, let me know.

Todd's love has always been developing players and game coaching. Its never been about "need" for a job, given his prior NBA career.
What Todd has always hated about the Div-1 college game is the travel and nights away from home--that has become huge issue with his young family. If you have not been involved in the sport, what is not know is the incredible time committment the sport takes for most of the year for all the coaches (head and assts)-- During the season long road trips are during the holiday seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years-- If you are not on the road with the team, every night of the season is involved with scouting upcoming opponents/seeing recruits/taking with recruits. All summer its watching AAU ball and also recruiting-- For a young single guy, that may be glamorous, for an older guy, especially one with a family, its a terrible life--and that includes Div-I head coaches-- Ask the wife of one who is married and you will hear that from early Nov until the end of summer, they are lucky if they see their husband in the evening more than a handful of times. Div-II is little better. At Div-III no schollies so recruiting is virtually non-existent, you don't follow AAU ball, most opponents are within an hours drive so travel is rarely overnight and you are usually home for the holidays. Only drawback is the paylevel is not that high. Todd taking a Div-III is no surprise to me at all. |

Whatever makes him happy. I'm sure the average tenure at D3 is considerably longer than D1 too, so he can give his kids some stability.
Whatever happened to Tim Murphy? That guy was pretty funny. |

SocalBrett wrote:I wonder if Doug Oliver would be a candidate to replace Murphy. According to the OC Register Oliver was a rumored candidate to replace PD. Well if Oliver becomes the lead assistant he would be in place to replace PD after PD retires or his contract is not renewed. Doug Oliver's bio Oliver currently works at UCI as Izzi's assistant.
