(which has been over a decade) He's had a rollercoaster tenure at UCI and has done a mediocre job of recruiting, with ZERO tourney appearances. I understand recently we were one game away against CSUF, but thats not good enough for me after 12 years. Yes, in 2001 we had a NIT invite, but since then, we've done nothing. We have seen the coaches of CSUN, UCSB, UC Davis, Long Beach and UC Riverside recruiting some quality 2 or 3 star players and transfers over the years. I hope when his contract is out we can get a coach that is looking to make a big splash and really turn this thing around. Mike Izzi needs to step up and get us a coach that has MAJOR D1 experience that will get us the best talent at UCI. May sound crazy but we should have even gone for Isiah thomas. He went to a low level D1 school and their getting national attention and great incoming recruiting class. As bad as he was in the NBA, expect to see FIU basketball turned around. Call me crazy but I am tired of settling for Big West Tourney exits and after Douglass' 12 years at UCI, I expect more. Last Edited By: UCIEATER 06/16/09 4:20 PM. Edited 2 times.

Member Posts: 139 06/17/09 9:17 AM	The time to make a decision on Douglass for the 2009-10 season has come and gone. My understanding is this is the last season on his contract so if the Eaters don't perform, Izzi can look elsewhere. I'm actually cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season. If we stay healthy, I think Wise, Hunter, Rembert, Strings, Folker, Moore, and Atkinson can do some damage in the Big West. I"m not even mentioning our incoming class since none of them have even played a minute in D1. The biggest obstacle any UCI basketball coach has to overcome is the entrance requirement. The most talented academic qualifiers that choose to go to a UC school will sign with either UCLA or UC Berkeley. Irvine, Santa Barbara, Davis, and Riverside get the leftovers assuming they don't choose another school first. Plus the players know that there's no free lunch at UCI. They'd better hit the books and go to class or they're out. What are FIU's entrance requirements? If you're a good player and you choose to play for Crisiah, you're in! It would be interesting to know what percentage of D1 players on scholarship would have qualified at a UC school. If the upcoming season is another loser, then I think it'll be time for Douglass to move on.

Who else can claim responsibility for mismanaging an entire league out of existence? FIU is in the Sunbelt conference, which is today where the Big West was in the 90s -- a transient flop house for schools with crappy football programs looking to move up in the world. Going to coach basketball at FIU is taking the absolute bottom of the barrel job in college coaching. Thomas wants to prove that he can go six months without destroying a team or drawing a personal lawsuit and FIU is looking for some publicity. Sorry dude, but I'll take my mediocre Anteater program over the circus that's sure to come at FIU. As for Pat Douglass and underperformance, remember that NO coach has every taken UCI to the tournament. Douglass' predecessor, Rod "Can't buy a win" Baker, fielded the worst teams in the history of the school. I'd like to see UCI take the next step, and I don't know if it's gonna' take a new coach to do it, but when I look at the state of the Big West from afar, the reality of the situation is that it's a one bid conference now and for the forseeable future. So just like in 2000-2001, UCI could virtually run the table in conference play, but get left out by stumbling in the Anaheim Big Dance Lottery...er...uh...conference tournament. The other time Irvine came close to the tourney was in the 90s when they went something like negative 157 and 16 in conference, but got lucky in the conference tournament and made it to the championship game against NMSU. Would you have considered that a succesful season had they won that last game? Irvine has found amazing success in its olympic sports and baseball, but basketball is a whole 'nother ball of wax to make a move in. Between its entrance requirements, geographic proximity to much bigger, shinier programs, and its membership in the Big West Conference of Basketball Mediocrity, I'd say Douglass has been doing an adequate job. That said, if Izzi can pull a coup and get us a Reggie Theus for the pittance UCI salary, I'd be all for it.

I'm as big of an Isiah Thomas hater as there is, but there is no salary cap for him to mess up in college, and players are going to want to come play for him because of his connections on the next level. If the Big West is really considered as a better conference than the Sunbelt, I think UCI should have atleast thought about bringing him down here. He's the worst NBA GM of all time but is great at finding talent. He drafted Damon Stoudemire, David Lee, Nate Robinson, Wilson Chandler, and a kid named Tracy McGrady, and is a decent coach. And keeping it in the Big West. UC Davis, and UCSB are on our level (academically and basketball wise), so why does it seem like they get better talent in the groups of players they recruit? UCD head coach gary stewart grabbed 5 players that are 2 or 3 star recruits, and their a brand new d1 school. UCSB also have six 2 or 3 star recruits on their roster. Rivals.com rankings aren't everything but it still says something about Douglass and the program. We had only two seniors on this past season's squad, both of which were JC transfers, where were the freshman recruits of 4 years ago? Did some declare early for the NBA draft? I dont think so. The Isiah talk is random but all I'm saying is SOMETHING HAS GOT TO CHANGE, and it should start with Coach Douglass after another "rebuilding" season next yr Last Edited By: UCIEATER 06/19/09 11:01 AM. Member Posts: 16 06/17/09 9:39 PM	The Taft High School coach was rumored to be offerred $100,000 a year to coach at a different high school, and he didn't take the job. If top high school coaches can make that kind of money, it is hard to believe UC Irvine will be able to hire someone with a lot of experience in this economy. We would have take a big gamble on someone without a proven track record or find someone who isn't interested in money. I think Douglass will be around after this year. The team should be solid better than average for the conference. Is that settling for mediocrity. Maybe. If we go with someone without a proven college record, I'd vote for trying to line up the Taft coach as a future candidate. He showed he is a great coach last season when Taft beat Fairfax and he has a proven track record at developing talent. There are going to be a bunch of Taft alum in the Big West next season.
