Reminder: First US Gold Cup game on tonight | #1
|
The game is on tonight at 6:00 on Fox Soccer Channel. The conventional thinking is that tonight might be Evans' best chance to get in to a game, given
that they are playing in Seattle, where he plays for the Sounders. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

And to anyone who missed it, Brad Evans DID make it into the game, getting his first cap with the US national team. He came in in the 63rd minute.... and
we'll just gloss over the fact that he looked nervous and played scared. A great day in UCI soccer history, nonetheless.

Evans gets the start vs. Haiti and goes the full 90 | #3
|
Evans started and played the full match versus Haiti. Evans played right back, he did not look impressive but neither did his teammates on the back line. Last
night's game might be Evans' last game in a while with the USMNT.

Evans is in a tough spot. He is being played out of position at right back because it is an area of relative need for the US Men's National Team at the
time. Unfortunately, he is not very good at all at that position. On the other hand, Evans' natural position of defensive midfielder is perhaps the
position where the US has more depth than anywhere else (Bradley, Edu, Clark, and the incoming Jones.)
Anyway, as you said, I also expect this to be his last game in a while, unless he gets called in for sub duty at the end of one of the remaining Gold Cup games. To be honest, as much as I enjoyed seeing him out there, I don't expect him to get many more call ups at all unless he improves greatly. This year's Gold Cup was a rather unique situation, where the US first team had just played in a major tournament, and so they decided to construct a roster of players with almost nobody from the "A team." Not only that, but the roster was decidedly young and aimed at looking at future players. Given the fact that US rarely sends a pure "B team" to situations like this and that Evans did not seem to do too well in his time on the field, I don't expect to see him much more. At this time, it does not look like he belongs on the international stage, even against teams like Haiti. He is a fine MLS-level player, and I enjoy watching him with the Sounders, but I just don't think he has much of a future on the international level. There is no shame in that, really. |

Interesting news re: Evans | #5
|
Steve Cherundulo, who was Evans prime competition at right back for the Gold Cup, has left the team to return to train with his European team. As a result,
the chances of seeing Evans receive additional playing time (against better teams) has gone up significantly. Keep your fingers crossed!

I think Evans starts vs. Panama, even if he doesn't he could very well come in as a sub. The US has a thin roster now that Cherundolo, Davies, Feilhaber,
etc. have gone back to their club teams in Europe. I think Mexico now has to be the favorite to win the tournament. I don't understand why this tournament
is even taking place. We just had a Gold Cup in 2007, one that was meaningful.
On a side note, does anybody know where Matt Murphy is playing these days? I checked all the USL teams and he's nowhere to be found. Maybe he is in the PDL somewhere? Obviously we have Evans in MLS with the Seattle Sounders, Cameron Dunn is at Portland Timbers (USL-1), Kenny Schoeni is at Miami FC (USL-1), I believe David Sias is w/ the Austin Aztex (USL-1). I'm unsure about Anthony Hamilton he played a few games w/ Chivas USA in MLS. I think he fell all the way into the PDL. With three expansion teams coming into MLS over the next two years, these guys will get good chances to get to MLS. Somebody should do a men's soccer edition of Anteaters in the Pros.
