Meanwhile, UCI pitcher Christian Bergman, who went 9-3 as a junior in 2009 as the Anteaters' Saturday starter, is hurling with the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska League. Bergman figured he'd be toiling in the minor leagues at this point, but was not drafted, to the surprise of many, including Gillespie.
Through Tuesday, Bergman was 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA. He had made two appearances, one start, and thrown seven innings.
Bergman is hoping he can impress this summer enough to garner a free-agent contract offer from a major league team.
