Heck I'd actually put $10 away each month to help...if someone as broke as me who can't even come to games could afford $120 over the year I'm sure we could get a pretty nice pot going pretty fast. Benefits: -CSUN Hoops Club *%+$ -1 on 1 meetings with coach/AD -Allowed to exclusive events (maybe a practice session or the banquet). -Get options as to how the money is raised is spent (we raised X amount of money from the group and want to fund A, B, or C...what do you all think). Have different levels of memberships from a cheap student rate of say $20 per year to an alumni rate of around $100 per year and maybe a "gold" level or something of even more than that and give them even more benefits. Talk to Erin Oldschool and see what she thinks. She also has connections in the alumni association. Let's not just talk let's get this ball moving. So think you can bring this idea to her? It has been eight years since our last NCAA trip...the kind of momentum a program gets from this does not last long. We need to move on this and take advantage of the extra pride and interest in the program NOW!

Then you face the issue of people who were doing their own thing for pregame, tailgates, meeting at Hooters etc, that now will have to pay to get into a school sponsored event. Ask CSF what happened why they tried to charge baseball fans to get into a pregame BBQ for $10-$15. Those so called fans +#%%!$# more than ever. If you're going to start this club, you have to ask Bras for a wishlist of things he wants for his program. TV in the lockerroom? Video editing machines? If all of these people are not on board, we're wasting our time. I also think we need Kayliesdad and maybe Mr. Z since they are much closer to the program than anyone else on these boards. KD and Goodhands - are you in with me?

Member Posts: 803 03/21/09 8:06 PM	I'm in. However, you guys have to understand and buy into the concept that the wheels of progress turn very slowly. If we form this group now, and 6 months from now, everyone is bickering about the fact that we haven't broken ground on a new arena, we are wasting our time. We have to take baby steps. I would suggest that our first goal be scholarships for the basketball players. Over the last 2 years, Bobby has had to make personal fundraising calls to many donors just to cover the costs of keeping these guys in school. Have you ever heard of Bobby's "Elite 8"? He needed 8 donors to come up with $5K EACH just to get his full budget for scholarships. Maybe the first goal of the Matador Hoops club should be to become members of the "Elite 8". Oldschool, pm me with your contact info and lets talk. I'm pretty busy over the next couple of weeks with work, the highlight video and Easter preps at my Church, but I'd make some time to meet and discuss if you want. But I agree that it starts with small steps and I think this group can start helping with those small steps. I think TC was on the right track asking Bobby what he wanted...perhaps a tv in the locker room or something. The scholarship thing is another great idea...its a big challenge, but something concrete that will really help this program. I don't think we could raise $5,000 in one year, but thats a nice solid goal to aim for as we build this group. Along with membership fees we can have events and sell stuff and take other efforts to try to raise money. Oldschool thanks for agreeing to lead the effort on the ground there in Northridge. As I said I'm willing to donate $120 a year in $10 monthly payments and I'm sure I can get some others to do the same. I really think we can start something here and now that will help this program. If we reach the level where we can join that elite 8 I'd be thrilled and feel like we are truly helping make this a better program. KD I think your ideas are dead on, your call for small steps is right, and you have given us a big yet managable and truly worthwhile goal to start our efforts. Scholarships = better players = more wins = higher profile = new arena. Better the moaning about wanting a new arena or asking for a big donor to just step forward and donate tens of millions or expecting a dramatic change over night...this is a good solid first step in a LONG process to move this program forward. I think most posters on this board are reasonable and aren't expecting a new arena in 6 months. But if we start this group and help it grow over the years and keep helping out this program is small but meaningfull ways we can help get to a day when this program is successful enough where serious talk about a new arena can start.

Member Posts: 2724 03/21/09 10:01 PM	First and foremost, like YD said, walk before you can run. Talk among yourselfs and form clear goals and ideas. Then decide who are your spokemen. OS and KD? Then make sure Bras even wants this. This isn't always a no brainer. Some coaches do not want this. I'm sure Bras won't say no. But just make sure he is on board. So set up a meeting with Bras, led by 2-3 people. Tell him your ideas and what you want to do. Make sure Bras gets you a wishlist. TV? Video editing machine? DVD recorder? Whatever HE wants for his program. How are you going to raise money? Charging $50 for membership is fine. But what are you going to give them? T-shirt? So say $35 is "profit" , 100 members means $3,500 for Bras to use. Not a bad amount for a first year group. Getting a large membership should be your main goal. Start the membership drive with a no host event at a local bar. Make sure Bras, his assistants are there. The AD would be icing on the cake. I would do it in late August to early Sept. when it is a slow time for the coaches. Supply some appetizers for the group. Make sure people RSVP so you get an idea of the number of people going. If LN or somebody will front the money for t-shirts, have the T shirts there so if people sign up, they can get their t shirts. During the season, charge $5-$10 for pregame stuff. Tailgates for Sat games.. Work out happy hour deals with local bars/restaurants for weeknight games.

BTW, they already have a big screen TV in the locker room, but last I heard, they could use a couch. Last time I was in there (a while ago), it was just folding chairs. Video editing software is really cheap these days (academic pricing for under $300) and it all runs on a laptop. I think they already have this as well. The department also has multiple DVD recorders as part of the Big West TV equipment. I also agree we should try to get as many people signed up as possible. We should try to get some help from the Alumni Assn. Maybe Erin and Gray Mounger can help with this. I also do the videos for the Alumni Assn. Distinguished Alumni Awards program, so they at least know me over there.

I do agree that Bras must be onboard, but you have to present him a good, detailed proposal about this group. If he thinks it is half assed, he won't agree to it. Post and pin a thread with location, time and date. Mon-Wed are fine for me but no dive bars, no chain places and no pizza places. If Mayor comes, make sure he doesn't pull a dine and dash.

I agree with TC that asking the coach what he needs for the program is a good idea, that we should "walk before we can run" and I like KD's suggestion of trying to build up to becoming part of that elite 8. Plans to raise money: 1. Membership fee's (try to get as many people as possible). 2. Pre-Game tailgates/events 3. Raffles at the games 4. Having a link to a donation page at the top of this message board year round (paypal should be easy to set up). Monthly meetings at a local establishment would be great and every meeting can have a different guest "host." Having a small membership fee to join and tell people to bring $10 to each monthly meeting or something. If you have a big enough group many restraunts will even set up profit sharing deals with you. I also know there are a lot of loyal alumni/matador fans we see each year who don't go on these boards. Talking to someone like Erin about sending a blast email to the season ticket list would be helpfull. I feel great about oldschool and KD leading this effot...Goodhands if you're out there you could really help us move this forward as well. If the three of you could sit down and come up with a plan using the ideas people give from this board...and then sit down with Bras and/or Erin I think we could get this thing going. Let them know (1) we actually have a plan, (2) our main goal is to see what THEY want to help this program, (3) we are realistic with our expectations (not going to make this program the envy of the BW by raising some money online, but becoming elite 8 members by the 2010/2011 season is a realistic and worthwhile goal), and (4) that we can raise atleast a few hundred bucks within a very short period of time(first two months or so) to show we're serious. LN made those t shirts. I find it interesting that nobody else has replied on this thread about becoming a member or wanting to help set up the club. Even if you're a recent graduate you can shell out $50 to help the program. Oh, set up a Facebook and myspace account for the group. I would also think up another name besides Matador Hoops Club. I mean it is not original.

Awesome with hoops contests, prizes etc and tailgate atmosphere with Matadors' players accomplishment highlights this season. Guests included UCLA, UCI, LBS, SDSU, CSUN, USC, etc. Hoops contest and prizes. ...Guests include whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, native americans, etc....so it's typical March Madness shindig in SoCal. and most of them wearing March Madness teams jerseys or tees. ...and my point is...we have to be focused as fans as to the direction and PR image of CSUN and/or Matadors. Imo, QJ and Braswell are moot points, whether they are in the realm of the 'ridge. csunoldschool's take makes more sense with me right now, imo. ...red rally'ers, matamaniacs, bull pitters, los viejos toros, matacrazies, etc are fine but, Matador fans must have a unified media name just like in 2001. It must also have at least five main objectives that are realistically attainable in a relatively short timeframe with the help of this proposed group: ...My two cents are ( I'll leave the other three cents to others): ...To attain consistent sold-outs or near capacity attendance at Matadome with better marketing, promo and other outreach efforts* ...Help the program to be at least a Sweet Sixteen team within the next five years, without knowingly breaking established rules of NCAA, the University and the law (in-campus tailgating an implied exception )* ...etc etc etc. ...great generals need good soldiers too. LN...reporting for duty...sir!!! * Surprise the Queen: Fill-up Room 140 consistently to the rim and the Matadors may have a state-of-the art arena funded mainly by donations and naming right $$$, sooner than later.
