I just read on the LBS board that Monson said Phelps & Robinson are gonna need some help, after the scrimmage. That doesn't bode well for Fleming &
Chin and I wonder if UCSB is in that same boat? UCR has 1 big guy & CSUN has none! Go CSF!

UCSB has talent in the post, but with the loss of Byrd, depth will be an issue. Between Serna, Pastorek, Somogyi, Phippen and Devenny, each brings a different
element, even if each has limitations.
Serna is strong, but at 6'7", is an undersized 5. He is good with his back to the basket, but limited facing the bucket. Pastorek is a good outside shooter and a great passer, but he is thin and has limited Div. 1 experience (his production in SDSU was lackluster). Somogyi is 7'3", and poses huge problems for opposing shooters, as he is a shot-blocking machine. He runs well for his size, and has gained 20 pounds of muscle at 242. He also has a decent mid-range shot, and can finish. He is limited laterally, and still needs to gain strength. Phippen may be UCSB's best 3-point shooter, but he is also thin and gets shoved around on both ends of the court. Devenny has a good shot, is strong, and defends the post well. But he is a true freshman with zero div. 1 experience. All in all, UCSB's front court is solid, if young, and the loss of Byrd will hurt, but it won't be catastrophic. The backcourt is talented and deep.

Dakyne.....I envision a last 5 minutes a game lineup of Serna, OJ, Nunnally, Powell/one of the Brews, Joyner (while not your biggest, probably your best
lineup)

LB is still a year away from dominating the conference. We FINALLY got a skilled center. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't win the conference and go to
the NCAA's this year though.
Uop's new practice facility looks nice and props to UC Davis on the upgrades. |

LBS weakness | #5 | ||

If TJ is gonna have to play center then my assertion a month ago that Chin in pick up BB was Not impressive, seems to be accurate. TJ is closer to
6'7" and Phelps is shorter than that. Even in the Big West this is a very small line-up and with out much depth... Fleming/Chin/Laz are all soft and
not ready for prime time. Other teams should try to pound LBS inside and see what they are really made of!

Fleming and Laz aren't soft, just not that skilled. Chang is soft. But he has a Euro game, no use trying to turn him into a banger overnight. Phelps
will be the latest 6-6 Big West inside force and TJ is still hard to stop and a sneaky great rebounder. Other than that, inside is all question marks. Chang
and freshman Richardson both have the most upside but both have glaring holes (Chang = soft, Richardson = defensive skills need much work)

Nick Shepard at 6-9 230 figues in at the 5 too. Thne Phelps can move to the 4 with TJ unless LBSU signs a legit 5. But that is next season. This season
Phelps and Richardson are the guys. Phelps has the mindset and skills to play the 5. Richardson just needs playing time to get to Phelp's level. Nothing
like fire to get a player like Richardson use to the battle.

Pencil in Robinson for close to 30 minutes a game, now that he has a year of prep school ball and freshman year under his belt.

CSUN doesn't need a big man to win conference for the 3rd time in a row | #9
|
Too much is made in college basketball about the "big man". CSUN doesn't need one,the Big West has only had one in the last few years, Parada
out of UCI, so what, big deal, most of the conference does not have one either, so chill and enjoy the b-ball.

OTOH, I thought CSUN's big man Townsend played a big part in their success their last 2 seasons--on both ends of the court.

I am pretty sure that Maraker, Yango, and Newton (all "big guys") had a little bit to do
with the success that UOP had in going to 3 straight NCAA's and winning 2 first round games.
And without Townsend, CSUN doesn't win the Big West last year. Big guys make a huge difference. It's just that they are such a prized commodity that if a player has size and any amount of skill, bigger name schools will take a chance on scholarshipping them because of their potential to develop into something special. |

"And without Townsend, CSUN doesn't win the Big West last year." I agree with this too, but I don't think one person would have agreed they
would have won it without Tresvant or Jenkins either.

He was right on Parada-- | #13

Although he had a lot of flaws, and never quite broke the NBA roster as an NBA 5 (he was the last cut of Sac a couple of years in a row)- Only Parada ( after
Candyman) were NBA type 5s out of the conference in the last 9 years-- The others you mentioned played the 5 position, and certainly performed very well at
that position, but none even approaced the 5 that fit the NBA physical mold (or even that at the BSC conference schools)-

Kandi Man went in the 1998 Draft, so that's 11 years ago. Wasn't Pape Sow from Fullerton getting some NBA looks?

Sow | #15 | ||

Never as a 5-- He made the Toronto roster as a 4, and got some playing time at that position until injuries cut short his career, but he was never thought of,
drafted or played at a 5.

Well, I could have sworn Sow was a true-blue, back to the basket 5 in college. I mean, doesn't a 4 have to be able to knock down mid-range jumpers?
