great - 3,000 fans in an 18,000 seat arena - very progressive thinking...that will look tremendous on TV. how do you "tarp" 3/4 of the seats?

Yeah, probably a one and done. But, at least they are thinking progressive. Now they need aggressive marketing from all schools, offering flight/hotel/ticket
packages for the farther away schools and fans/alum that have moved away from a reasonable drive.

obviously if the Big West could fill half of the Honda/Pond it would be great, AND the Convention Center IS dingy with terrible sight lines from the lower
risers, but given the league's current attendance I'd rather return to the really old days and let the regular season champ host the tournament...and
before someone corrects me, yes I know that 1st and 2nd round PCAA tournament games were held at the higher "seed" gyms leading up to the final -
but, why not reward the regular season champion?

I agree with you csuf78 regarding allowing the conference champs to host the tournament. There are logistical issues as well as issues regarding the
women's tournament, but all in all I think that's the best idea. With that said, I'm willing to reserve judgement about this potential news about
the Honda Center. I applaud the boldness, but I'm weary that this will be executed in a half-hearted manner with poor marketing and even poorer
attendance. We shall see.

Ticket price drop | #5 | ||

Tickets, which were $25 for the first two days and then $35, have been cut to I believe $20 and then $28.
Vouchers will cost just $10, half of what they were last season. I could have sworn the Big West was locked into a contract with the ACC for a couple of more years. |

I'd be very surprised to see the Ducks reschedule their March 12 home game to allow a Big West basketball tournament....

I think it was only 1977 where the 1st round was at campus sites. | #7
csuf78 wrote:In the first season of the PCAAT (1976), didn't only 4 teams participate (LB on probation and Fresno the odd school out) and the semis and championship game were all at Stockton Civic? The 1st round games in 1977 (3 of them) were at campus sites, with the higher seed hosting, and LB idle until the semis as the top seed. Starting with 1978, every game has been in one venue each season. |

I think the writer of this article probably means the 2010-2011 season. The BW is already advertising on their website for this year's tournament to be
held at the ACC. I hope that the writer is wrong all together, moving into a larger venue is just going to make the tournament look more ridiculous. Can you
imagine the first round games during the week at the Honda Center?

I think the argument against using campus sites is that it is what crappy conferences do, but face it, the Big West is a crappy conference. I don't know
how much it costs to rent the Honda Center, but surely the Big West will be losing a lot of money with revenue coming from a couple thousand fans. At least the
campus sites would basically be free.

The move to the Honda Center is a good one , but not the best one. There are four member arenas that can host the tournament and the conference champion
should be able to choose the site. I'm sure LB, UOP, Davis and UCI would all choose their home arena. The message is simple - upgrade your gym to an
arena and you'll get on the list. But since the President's and AD's get to vote and the crappy arenas have the majority, they chose the Honda
Center as the best alternative. I predict when one of them gets a new arena and the Honda
contract expires, they will go this route. |

I am sure the 76 tourney will also be moved there and that probably had a lot to do with the move.

Made for TV event | #12 | ||

Doubt it-- Its a made for TV event, and they don't care about a crowd-- The Ducks, at least on alternate years, tie up the Honda, and BIG performers also
tie it up over the Thanksgiving Holiday on the other years-- The BWC tourn and the 76 Classic are NOT going to oust the ice show, circus, headline act from the
Honda-- Besides, the Wooden Classic is the Honda's big college basketball show in early Dec, and its still booked for a couple of years at least.

I posted this on www.titancentral.com. This is my answer:"
If Fullerton won the conference, we'd be playing at Titan Gym. While it's bigger than Matadome, it's a little small too. The same applies to Riverside. Others in the BWC have arenas that are large enough. And yes this may be selfish, but I think Fullerton fans should support the status quo. It really does work for us. We're guaranteed a conference tournament in our own backyard. As for Honda Center, I can't see it. It's too big for where we are now. We don't draw enough. Until we can fill up the ACC, I don't see us moving and I don't see the point of moving. It's the right size and from a Fullerton perspective it's in the right location.

"Doubt it-- Its a made for TV event, and they don't care about a crowd..."
You maybe right but the crowd size would not be the driving force for the change. Since the tourney now attracts quality teams, the venue upgrade might have been necessary for tournament prestige and to provide the right type of amenities that top teams require. |

I never minded it being at the ACC. 7400 is an ideal capacity. | #15

Always enjoyed it from 1977-1982. And mostly enjoyed it this decade.

I like Toteda's idea. Not only does it encourage members to improve their facilities, but it also rewards the members and their communities for having
already invested in facilities. As it would stand right now, there would be a nice Socal/Nocal balance. The logistical and women's side issues still
remain, but it makes too much sense to go forward.
Regarding allowing conference champs to host the tournament regardless of the size of their facility, I don't have a problem with that. Sure some conference members have small facilities, but I doubt the opening rounds of the tournament draw anywhere near 1500 attendees (which is the size of the matadome I believe, forgive me if I'm wrong). The semi-finals and finals might be tight, but I'd rather have a packed house in a gym for the championship game than a half (or more than half) empty arena. Plus, I would think it would get some fans to $#!t or get off the pot, get tickets, and get to the gym early if there were a possibility they wouldn't get a seat. Creating a little demand and urgency among the fans of teams in the semi-finals and finals wouldn't be a bad thing in my opinion. |

I dig campus sites. Especially with Davis's remodel, Stockton having the downtown Arena, norcal arenas aren't bad. |

I agree with you. Sure, the ACC is starting to get a little decrepit looking, but the size is close to perfect if even a bit too big right now. I mean shoot,
UCI and CSUF didn't even come close to filling the place when they played in the BWT Final a couple of years ago.
To me, making the venue look full on tv is more important than making the venue look modern. I understand that they are trying to be forward thinking with this, but I would rather that they work on filling a venue before they work on getting a new venue. |

Very disapointed that UCI and CSF didn't bring many fans in 2008. | #19
|
I remember LB alone having some 3000 fans at the BWC title game in 2007.
If we could get all 3 schools' fans to travel like that, the ACC would be nearly full when any 2 of those played in an optimum time slot on the weekend. |

Your dissapointment might be a bit unfounded. LB may have brought more students in 2007 but they had a lower attendance in that title game than in 2008. The
attendance for the BW title game over the last 5 years:
2009 - 2272 2008 - 4234 2007 - 4130 2006 - 3639 2005 - 5229 5 year average: 3901 So it took a Nor Cal and out of state team to top the 5k mark, otherwise an average of under 4k is extremely unimpressive given the capacity of nearly 8k in the ACC. 4 of the BW gyms hold less than then average attendance mark so I will voice what others have said, why not let the conference champ host the tournament? Having a sold out environment in a smaller gym would be more exciting than hearing a pin drop in a massive arena. |
