The official 09-10 roster is posted on the UCI basketball site: http://www.ucirvinesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/ucir-m-baskbl-mtt.html. No new
bios or new pictures yet. Ryan Badrtalei is now an Assistant Coach and Rhett Soliday is Director of Basketball Operations. Does anyone know the reason they
switched positions? I also noticed that the 2 walk-ons from last season, Rashaad Ubah and Jonas Lalehzadeh, are no longer on the roster. Based on this roster
it looks like we'll be using a three guard offense with Strings, Moore, or Wilder at the wing. It would be interesting seeing Wise at the "3" but
that would mean that the quartet of Atkinson, Folker, Losonsky, and Simek would be able to provide all the requisite tools in the post. I'm hoping that
Flowers can provide quality minutes at the point allowing Hunter to be a full-time shooting guard. This is assuming that Rembert is fully recovered from his
off season injury by the time the season starts.

I agree. We won't know exactly what the team's got in terms of talent until they get on the court and play a couple games in anger. But on paper, the
roster screams three guards. There really isn't a proper 3 on the roster. I think Moore or Wilder (if he's ready) are the closest fits for a
"swingman." I don't not see Wise at the 3, even if the other bigs hold up their end of the bargain. I would not want to see Wise defending a 3.
People on the main board seem to be sleeping on UCI this year. I don't get it. I'm not saying they're the odds on favorites, but I am saying that I'll be surprised if they don't finish above .500 or in the bottom half of the standings. Even with all the problems last year, they still finished at .500 and tied for 4th. And UCI really did not lose too much in the way of talent. As one basic measure, 7 of the 9 teams lost an All BWC honoree last year - UCR and UCI were the only teams that didn't. 6 of those teams (I'm excluding LBS here) have at least one significant hole to fill. For UCI, their incoming players really don't need to be all that good for them to be an OK team. And if Losonsky and one of the freshman are actually good, at least one bye seems very likely.

I think its telling that the most recent accomplishment was for winning 20+ games back in 2003. We'll just pretend that 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008
haven't happened.

Wise and lack of respect | #3 | ||

I think my comment regarding Wise is more of who he could be rather than who he is. If he could lose some of the fat and get into rock hard condition, it would
increase his mobility and add some vertical to his game. Then he wouldn't have any issues guarding other 3s. I think that in order for Wise to be
successful at the next level (probably overseas), he'll need to play the 3. But Wise has proved people wrong at the D1 level so who's to say he
can't keep doing it as a pro?
I think the lack of respect for UCI is due to the equality of talent in the conference and the perception that other teams have done more to replace the missing pieces than UCI. I happen to disagree and think that Moore, Wilder, Losonsky, and Simek will more than make up for the losses of DeCasas, Lauer, and Bland. |

For one year PD happened to catch magic in a bottle when he had a team that included Parada, Jordan Harris, Gloger, Mike Hood, and Efebvre. Since then..............oh well, as his apologists always say, he did win a Div. II title once. |

Given that Ubah amd Lalezadeh are gone, my question is, do we have any walk-ons that will be on the team this year? I haven't heard anything.

And it will be a direct result of PD's change in recruitinig focus. Yes, he will still have to get the sometimes needed JUCO but that is unavoidable in some circumstances. The change now PD is bringing in more of the proven and tested high school players who were also very good on the club scene. There is no hiding in the summer. Wilder, Flowers in 09 as well as the verbal guys PD has lined up in 2010 all played against High D-1 talent. I have seen both Wilder and Flowers play and they more than held there own against these High D-1 guys. At the mid-major level they should be very good. |

Look at the updated rosters and you will see that not only are Lalezadeh and Ubah on the roster this year but seems as though another walk-on, Emil Kim, has
been allowed to join the team as well.
