It's hard for me to imagine anyone not picking LB to win it, but plenty aren't. I figured they'd be just about unanimous as the #1 pick, but I
guess many believe they are still a little too young.

As a Gaucho, I predict LB winning it all, even if I'm hoping UCSB goes dancing.

A race between LB, UCSB, and UCR. All 3 have solid coaching and solid talent.

Why LB not picked | #4 | ||
|
Lindy's preview and picks were from Long Beach Press-Telegram writer Frank Burlison, and he would never pick Long Beach even if they are the clear favorite
to win the league. He doesn't want anyone to see him as a homer. But I think Frank, like everyone else, realizes that the 49ers are the team to beat. The
Gauchos have proved nothing, even if they've added a little talent. They just don't carry themselves as a championship program.

Why LB not picked 1st | #5 | ||
|
While I certainly hope LB wins it all, and believe they have a good chance to, I think UCSB is a solid favorite based on the way they finished last season.
Like LB, SB loses it's best player (Morris/Devine), but SB picks up Orlando Johnson who appears to be the kind of talent who could fill that gap, further
SB's main weakness last season was spotty play from the PG position and Joyner's return looks to fill that gap. LB is being considered for the top of
the league on the basis of hoped for improvement from the already very good freshmen of last season. If Anderson, Ware, Robinson and Phelps can improve as much
as you would generally hope players do from their freshman to Soph seasons we will be pretty good. But we are also depending heavily on Larry Anderson who is
coming off a recent surgery for a torn ligiment in his shooting hand, and who also had minor knee surgery after last season.
So, while I think LB has the greater upside if all goes well, SB seems to have less question marks- therefore they ought to be the favorite in the preseason. But both teams need be aware that the gap between 1st and 8th has never been narrower in the BWC, and a lack of improvement or a key injury could turn any of these predictions upside down. |

UCR's inside presence | #6 | ||
|
I think losing Soto is the best thing that happened to UCR. It will open up playing time for Votteto who is 6'9" and over 250 pounds. He is a prep
school kid so he is older than the usual Soph. As well as Soto played defense he was a liability on the court because of his Very low BB IQ. We also have
6'8" B. Hampton who is a senior & Larry G. also a senior who was listed as the best defender on Gonzaga before coming to UCR. Austin is listed at
6'8" this year and he can also defend inside, if needed... UCR will be twice as athletic this year and will score at least 10 more points a game. UCR
is probably the oldest team in the Big West this year and hopefully that experience will pay off. Saying all that - I still think this will be a very tight
race down to the finish!

I think Burli believes UCSB will have the talent to win it all. The only thing that will hold them back is the coach, but Williams has done OK in the past.
Burli always calls them like he sees them and being a PT writer doesn't influence his picks. He does a better job picking them, than the coaches do. He
does watch many high school and college games and has a very good feel for what may happen. I think it may go like this UCR, LB, UCSB then CSF. Regardless it
is going to be a close race this year too whch means any of 8 teams has a chance to win it all.

Albeit, I am of course biased towards my alma mater, but I think the reason UCSB is a slight favorite over LBST breaks down like this:
-LBST finished last season 5-7, struggling when Morris was not playing or not 100% (meaning the young players were more relied on & did not have as much success winning games) -UCSB finished last season 8-2 (only losing to BWChamps CSUN), excelling despite the below expected play of SG James Powell and despite not having F Jesse Byrd at 100% (meaning younger players were more relied on and experienced greater success) -The teams split games last season, each winning at home -Both teams lost their leading scorer (graduation), and both teams bring back very talented young players, making the teams very even in terms of what is coming back -At least to me, the main difference is who is being added. While I know that people are pretty high on LBST's incoming players, they have yet to prove themselves at the Division 1 level (at least the one's expected to significantly contribute. Woodard, I read, is expected to be Casper Ware's backup), and we all know there is an adjustment period when transitioning to D1 basketball. UCSB is adding 3 players that are expected to contribute that have proven themselves to be D1 players (Johnson, Joyner, and Pastorek). Two of them have had good success. Johnson: breaking the LMU records for scoring and rebounding as a Frosh & Joyner: averaging 20.5 wins per season in his 2 years as a starting PG, and also leading the BW in assist to t.o. ratio. When you add this to what is coming back, you get UCSB as a slight favorite. I also think it would be very unwise of anyone who follows the Big West to discount any of the teams that are picked 1-5. This will be a very balanced league, and almost every team will be better than they were last year. |

I have one slight disagreement with this statement -
LBST finished last season 5-7, struggling when Morris was not playing or not 100% (meaning the young players were more relied on & did not have as much success winning games)I actually saw very differently (some would agree too). Morris' injury hampered the team's chemistry. We won tougher games when Morris was completely left out of the lineup (and in street clothes) - because everyone else on the team knew their clear roles in his absence. When he came in, he was limited defensively and wasn't the same "D-Mo" that we all knew due to his injury. Seemed to deflate the rest of the team. So I actually think last year's team performed FAR better without Morris in the lineup. When he wasn't in the lineup, there were games when all four of our freshmen carried double figures - including road games. We all love D-Mo - but I honestly think his injury took himself and everyone else out of their games when they decided to have him in there.
Nothin' Finer Than a Forty-Niner...
GO BEACH!!!

Long Beach was obviously one of the better teams in the Big West last year overall.
However, I think what the other poster's point was (and he can correct me if I am wrong) is that most of Long Beach's significant accomplishments from last year came with a healthy Donovan Morris at the beginning of the year. They beat Temple with a healthy Morris. They started 5-0 in the Big West with a healthy Morris. After Morris' injury, Long Beach was very much a middle of the pack Big West team. It is a fair point made by the original poster, and one that I have thought about myself in the past. I think that Long Beach's shiny second place finish last year hides the fact that they did indeed struggle somewhat after Morris was injured. D |
