What is the process for a walk on to get on the team? |

I see UCLA listed their roster and have included walk ons as part of their roster. It made me curious as to how walk ons get on the team? When do they try
out and how is it know if they will make the team before the team can legally hold practices?

Usually only by invitation from the coaching staff. They are usually recruited players for whom no scholarship is open, but some kind of arrangement has been
discussed that if they walkon and contribute, a scholly will be available in the second year-- kind of "show me" situation.
Some teams do hold open tryouts and invite one or two of those to be a "practice player" walk on. The players who go this route are usually those who participate in the open gym workouts and hence are already known to the returning players and they will mention to the coaching staff that "Mr X" would be a good walkon player. Very rare someone just "shows up" and makes the roster as a walkon. |

Thanks for the link - anyone want to make a guess on projected starters? | #3 | ||

I would guess there will be changes as the year goes on...
Anyone seen Moore play recently? Is he healthy now? How is Wise fitness wise? He started last year a bit out of shape and worked himself into shape as the season progressed. I hope he comes in better shape to begin this year. |

I think PD is going to switch up the starting lineups alot in the first 7-10 games like he did last year. But I think what I would like to see as the starting
lineup would be:
G- Hunter G- Strings G- Moore F- Wise C- Losonsky But I have a feeling that PD is going to end up with Rembert Hunter Moore Wise Atkinson |

I think that this is highly subject to change... one can only speculate how good the incoming players will be in D1.
1 Rembert 2 Hunter 3 Moore 4 Losonsky 5 Wise The X Factor (yes, that's a bold-faced, italicized x) is how the bigs do. Wise is pretty much the only established commodity. Atkinson and Folker both had their strengths, but improvement for both would be welcome. And of course, how the incoming Slovakian players fare as well. |

Why do you put Wise at the 5 rather than Losonsky?
I understand that Losonsky has a nice shot, but I personally would prefer to have a guy who is closer to a natural center (at least size wise) than Wise at that spot. While Wise can probably score either way, my guess would be that his defense and rebounding skills will be more useful at the 4 than the 5. Granted, I haven't seen Losonsky play at all, so my opinion might change at that time. D P.S. One thing I do feel strongly about is that any lineup is going to have to have Rembert in it (or perhaps Flowers if he has a good start.) I do not feel that Hunter is a point guard, and in order for the team to be successful (and to maximize Hunter's usefulness as a spot up shooter), they need a better passer and penetrator at the point guard spot. |

I wouldn't get too hung up on that distinction now, because what the front court will look like is very fluid, depending on what kind of players show up in October. And it's not like there is too much difference between a 4 and 5 anyway in today's game. I would say for sure that Hunter would be a 2... except it seems like every year they have to go through the exercise of Hunter playing the point, until it becomes clear that he does much better as a shooter. So who knows, maybe they'll go through it again this year. |

Why... because they play our style better than we do"
Also because they were a foot taller than us at every position! And it remains that way this year too. Wise can turn into a offensive beast in the post but at 6'5 (so they say) he creates some matchup problems on defense, that goes for hunter as well if he plays the SG position. Davis' SG is 6'7 Mark Payne, and a 6'11 center. Until Atkinson turns into a major defensive presence in the paint to help out, this may always bite us in the a** |

Davis has everyone outsized that wasn't, and I don't think will be, the primary issue this year. It will be the style we choose to play, when we play
them. I think PD has it figured out. As far as Payne is concerned he's their pg. Shooting guard implies you have a shot and he has none... at least he
had none. I don't care who Davis put's in the other guard spot Payne will be their playmaker and he along with Harden, will dominate the ball on
offense. Everyone else, to some degree, was able to use their size against them on the other end of the court. After all they were the 8th seed, albeit one
game and some tie breakers from the 4th seed.

When thinking about the roster, I was actually a bit pleased to see that we might not be so heavily slanted towards the three pointer this year.
Last year, we had two major contributors who provided almost nothing on the offensive end aside from pull up jump shots (Hunter and Lauer.) Derrick Strings was also close to fitting in to this mold as well. While I definitely like having a presence who can nail the three pointer when needed, I would also prefer it if we got more mid-range jumps shots and penetration layups from our players. Those types of things seem to be more consistent and reliable than hoping that your three point shooters will be "feeling it" on any given day. It will be interesting to see how and if Douglass can adjust his gameplan to fit around the personnel. If he can adjust the gameplan effectively, I think I like our mix of players this year more than I liked last year's. |
