Member Posts: 1015 07/03/09 10:19 AM	Tags : None I received a call today from the athletic department giving me a head's up that some of the season tickets are going to be changed so that there is more room for students to have better seats. If you sit on the far side of the Bren (opposite the players benches), they will be relocating your seats within the next month. I am personally dissapointed about this because I believe I currently have excellent seats. Nevertheless, this may create more atmosphere at the Bren in the long run by having the students on the entire far side of the Court. Given our pathetic schedule next year, they better do a lot of promotions.

The lack of students at all UCI sporting events is simply pathetic and inexcuseable. We need their presence and enthusiasm to truly have home advantage. What is really sad is that none will travel to away games. Look at the BWC tourney at the ACC. Is 10 miles really that far to go to encourage extending the season? Although total attendance has always been lacking miserably there, the local schools should have a much better following. The AD needs to get the kids there. Period. Hey Brett, you usually sit in the bleachers with the band anyway at the Bren. Maybe you can move your season tickets to there.

Member Posts: 1016 07/03/09 7:37 PM	sometimes because I only buy 2 season tickets and tend to bring my kids. Or, I sit there to bs with others while the game is going on. But, I do like my seats where they are at and will be dissapointed in my view is not as good. The thing about sitting opposite the coaches and players bench is your view is not obstructed when they stand. Anyway, if the students actually fill up that entire side (which I tend to doubt for many of the games), it will be worth the chance.

I'm pretty sure that entire side was for students when I was in school. I don't know what difference it'll make. Wherever the student section is, I can't imagine that the student body has changed significantly to the pro sports side from my time, but I bet the steps to the library are crowded as ever on a Friday night, eh?

Member Posts: 12 07/04/09 8:33 AM	The far side was to be for the students when the Bren was opened in the 80's. As a graduate of that era, the enrollment my senior year was about 9500. It's now almost 30,000. Yet, the number of students attending the events is far worse. Why? Granted, the school's demograghics are such that sports isn't a priority. But, with the more than 300% increase in enrollment, the statistical probability that the attendance would be worse now than before fails logic. Again, this is an athletic department failure. Hopefully, this is about to change as SOCALBRETT moves to the other side of the court.

You get a conference that can't attract more than the occasional JC transfer, and you get a conference of perpetual mediocre performance on the court. Combine that with a student body who typically goes trolling for dates in the library, and you're just simply gonna' be hard pressed to get attendance no matter what you do. Overall, I've got to give props to the Irvine athletic department for doing some amazing things with little resources ever since Dan Guerrero and Ralph Cicerone set foot on campus. It's early to tell, but I've got faith in Izzi to continue the overall upward trend. But I still think basketball is gonna' suck in both performance and attendance for a good long time.

During the 80's the BW was at worst the 2nd best conference on the west coast. A school could schedule a bunch of cupcakes in non conference because the BW was so tough. So the BW brand name was so much better, schools would draw better and it was real attendance, none of this BS way of counting attendance. At during that time period, 82-92 the BW only got at large bids in (Of course UNLV is the other BW school, I just assumed they got the auto bid) 83 USU 84 Fresno 88 USU 90 SB and New Mexico St 91, New Mexico St.

Member Posts: 1017 07/04/09 4:17 PM	The student section was never the entire opposite side. It's probably how it should be. At least that's how it's at at Duke, UCSB, Gozaga, etc.. This may be the right year to make it like that because there will probably be few season ticket holders to move (maybe 100-150 seats at most). We will see if I get comparable tix, which I doubt. Then, when the program draws more, there will not be as much drama. As far as the Big West, it use to be the 2nd best conference on the West Coast by far. In fact, it did compete with the Pac 10. I think it's obviously an issue of lack of leadership in the Big West.

As for the decline in the conference, it really shouldn't matter the quality of the other teams if we get the job done. Marketing to the students is a must. How about some promotions? Yes, it's a form of bribery. But, we need the students engaged in our teams. See the various promotions the minor league baseball teams use. We don't need to re-invent the wheeel here. Many can be done at very low cost. My key point remains that our teams will do better and the atmosphere will be more hostile to visitors with alot more students at our games. This goes boyond hoops. Thus, an AD responsibility.

Member Posts: 388 07/06/09 9:45 PM	It is likely that our very weak OOC schedule will inflate our record. Perhaps the administration is thinking that the artificially inflated record will attract the casual followers, which I would assume is consistuted primarily by students. We shall see. As far as next year, I do think we have a shot. DeCasas leaving does not help at all, but we do have a shot. Even better than next year may be the year after. That year, we will have Rembert, Losonsky, Simek, and Moore as seniors, along with a junior Eric Wise. That, along with production from this year's incoming freshman, may give us another good shot. Unfortunately, I think that teams like Long Beach and Davis are going to be very strong that year as well. Again, only time will tell.
