First Eater Taken in 2009 MLB Draft |
Lead | ||
|
Unlike recent years, and despite reaching #1 in the polls for the first time, I don't see a clear cut early round prospect among UCI's draft eligible
players.
Which Anteater do you think will be picked first in the MLB Draft on June 9th? (Total Votes: 17) - ClosedDaniel Bibona (11 / 64.7%) Ben Orloff (0 / 0%) Francis Larson (3 / 17.6%) Christian Bergman (0 / 0%) Eric Pettis (1 / 5.9%) Other (please name in comments) (2 / 11.8%) |

I am SHOCKED no Bergman, Pettis, or Larson so far....they may not have been top 5-10 round guys, but not even top 30?

Smart guys | #22 | ||

The draft is about potential--not what you actually did in college--and Cory has potential tools-- Also a possible explanation is that these are smart guys
(two of them, in addition to Bibona are honorees at the scholar/athletes award banquet, with Eric taking one of the top awards)--They know the value of an
immediate degree if baseball doesn't work out--I am sure they set a price to leave early that MLB may not be willing to meet--
Looking more and more that our weekend staff plus closer will be returning |

I gotta be honest, I had completely forgotten about Brian Hernandez. Coming into the season he was supposed to be an impact transfer from Cal State LA and
College of the Canyons, but was ruled ineligible for this season. Anyway, he was drafted by the Indians with pick #1175.

Paul Strong | #24 | ||
|
A friend of mine, who is a teacher at Marina HS, and a UCI grad, talked to Paul Strong today, he said he's commited to attending UCI this fall...good news
for our pitching staff. Hopefully Bibona and Bergman stay, Strong will make a nice 3rd weekend or weekday starter.

UCI junior second baseman Casey Stevenson was the first of three current or future Anteaters taken within 20 picks. The Milwaukee Brewers made Stevenson the 1,156th player chosen (38th round). Drew Hillman, a two-time All-American third baseman at Orange Coast College who has signed with UCI, was taken in the 38th round (No. 1,159 overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. Brian Hernandez, an infielder who redshirted this season at UCI due to eligibility issues, was chosen in the 39th round (No. 1,175 overall) by the Cleveland Indians. In all, 15 players with local ties were chosen in the 50-round draft that began Tuesday. OCC sophomore Tim Wallach tops that class as a third-round choice (96th overall) by the Dodgers. UCI Coach Mike Gillespie said he had expected Anteaters juniors Christian Bergman, Francis Larson and Eric Pettis to be selected. Additional UCI players who were eligible but ignored in the draft included senior Eric Deragisch, juniors Kyle Necke, Cory Olson, Jeff Cusick, and Dillon Bell, seniors Brock Bardeen and Tony Asaro, as well as redshirt sophomore Ryan Fisher. "I tell myself every year that nothing will surprise me in the draft," said Gillespie, who guided the Anteaters (45-15) to their first Big West Conference championship and the consensus No. 1 national ranking the final three weeks of the regular season. "But I am surprised by this draft ... I'm surprised that so many players went undrafted, or were drafted as low as they were. I am immensely surprised that Larson, Bergman and Pettis were not drafted." Pettis, a closer who had 17 saves for a second straight season, was named second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. and chosen third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Bergman, the team's No. 2 starting pitcher behind junior Danny Bibona (a first-team All-American picked in the 16th round by the St. Louis Cardinals), was 9-3 with a 3.50 earned-run average in 2009. He earned second-team all-conference honors. Larson, a catcher, led the 'Eaters in home runs (nine) and runs batted in (43) for the second straight season and made strides defensively, Gillespie said. He was a first-team all-conference performer. "I'm most surprised by the Larson deal," Gillespie said. "I would have thought that his improvement as a defender would have, by itself, got him drafted. I would not have been shocked to have seen him go inside the first 10 rounds, certainly the first 20. That one surprised all of us. "I am almost equally surprised by Bergman and Pettis. Those guys have a track record of winning and I would have thought they would have been drafted, and drafted in the first 15 rounds." UCI senior shortstop Ben Orloff (a ninth-round pick by the Houston Astros), Bibona and junior pitcher Cory Hamilton (23rd round by the Detroit Tigers) are all expected to sign, Gillespie said. Gillespie said Stevenson, Hillman and Hernandez fall in the draft-and-follow category. They will be evaluated over the summer before potentially being offered a contract lucrative enough for them to sign. Gillespie said incoming recruits Paul Strong (17th round by to the Texas Rangers), Kyle Hooper (28th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates) and Beau Wright (29th round by the Minnesota Twins) would have to be offered money significantly more than players chosen in those rounds are offered, in order for them to sign. "I'm greedy and selfish and I want all the players back," Gillespie said. "But I understand that often times [not being drafted] is a disappointment and I don't really enjoy the fact that they are disappointed." Stevenson hit .346 with three homers, 41 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 2009. A second-team all-conference honoree, he was eight for 15 in the Irvine Regional to make the all-regional team. Hillman hit .363 with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs to help lead OCC to the state title. His 21 doubles are a school single-season record and he posted a .646 slugging percentage. Gillespie called Hernandez the team's best hitter. Hernandez played formerly at College of the Canyons (he hit .450 in 2008) and Cal State Los Angeles (the team's Freshman of the Year in 2007). |

While incoming players Strong, Hooper and Beau (not James) Wright are expected at UCI next year. And Bergman, Larson, Pettis, Deragisch, Necke, Olson, Cusick and Bell are coming back. |

UCI future boosts By Barry FaulknerIn the recesses of their office facility in Newkirk Pavilion, the UC Irvine baseball coaches were quietly high-fiving one
another Thursday, when the last of the three-day Major League draft had concluded without ravaging the Anteaters' projected 2010 depth chart.
