Greg "Shoes" Vetrone |

For those who remember, Shoes, the former asst. coach at UCI under Rod Baker, has now been named interim head basketball coach at Fairleigh Dickinson in New
Jersey. He was probably responsible for bringing in some of our better players from New York. Kevin Simmons and Tzacha Shipp (who never played due to almost
getting killed in an automobile accident) would probably head the list . He subsequently went to UNLV where he got in trouble with the NCAA. It will be
interesting to see how he does. He has unbelivable recruiting connections.

Actually, Tchaka was killed in that car accident (Simmons was driving and fell asleep). He was dead for about 3
minutes before being brought back by the paramedics.

Technically you're not dead when your heart stops but when you go brain dead. When the heart stops you have about 10 minutes for someone to perform CPR
until the EMT can arrive & electrically shock your heart into restarting again.
Although I've heard only about 10% or less who have CPR performed on them end up living so it was like Shipp hitting a half-court shot at the buzzer to win a game of life or death.

How in the world did this guy get back into coaching at the NCAA level? I can't remember if he was ever formally charged by the NCAA, but that SAT
scandal was all over the news, including ESPN. He basically got kids from NY to come to CA (Lakewood) and have the SAT taken here, such as Kevin Simmons.

I'm pretty sure that this was the presiding AD when their men's hoops team got the "death penalty." And I remember at the time thinking... really? I think largely the memory that scandal has been forgotten... but the time, it was just about 5 years old. Granted, this was the AD and not the basketball coach... but still... really? Point is I suppose... maybe memories aren't that good, or people don't care as much as they ought to. |
