It looks more like Zach......but he probably just put on that jersey for a picture.

Is Zack a lefty? | #3 | ||

If so, then it's him. Plus the physique fits. Wise is listed at 6-5 235 while Atkinson is 6-9 220.

It's embarrassing that they could do something like that and have one player wearing another player's jersey. It'd be one thing if Zach was wearing
a number that no one else on the team was wearing. But to wear Eric's number? What a freaking joke...
And if that error wasn't enough, why not put a guy like Hunter, Rembert, or Lauer in the spotlight? You know, guys who have actually suited up for the 'Eaters in the past... One last note: Anybody hear who the special NBA star cameo will be at Midnight Madness? I'm not getting my hopes up, but I have a bad feeling it will be one of these 3: Sun Yue, Didier Mbenga, or Sasha Vujacic. And it'd be disappointing if it was Trevor Ariza or Jordan Farmar. |

I was going to answer your question Vit D but seeing as you already found your info....i'll still speak a little more on it ;-) : Midnight Magic is this
Friday and this year it is combined with Shocktoberfest with a pretty cool festival/carnival scene starting around 6 leading up to performances by UCI groups
and then a couple of bands/singers. Headlining the event is "Three 6 Mafia" (which is pretty big btw for some of you out there wondering)...It's
refreshing to see ASUCI teaming up with Athletics to put on great events because not only does this type of event get THOUSANDS of students out (yes I said
THOUSANDS...im anticipating this to be sold-out) and not only spread "school spirit" but also get to showcase our Basketball teams to some of the
freshmen or even sophmores and other upper classmen.
Hopefull that would give a boost to student attendance at the games...this is going to be my 4th year and I have steadily seen a slight increase in CIA shirts at the games every year. So here's to hoping this year will keep the trend going (which Shoctoberfest will no doubt help out in). As far as cameo by an NBA star, I think you hit it right on the head....Although I'm not the biggest Kobe Bryant fan, I have a feeling it might be him because of the aforementioned reasons. For me personally that would be the second sighting of a current NBA player/exec (Jerry West and Brian Cook were at a game 2 or 3 years ago). P.S. This event is free only for Undergrads who are guaranteed admission till 9:30 with previoulsy picked up wrist-bands. If there is additional seating available other people might be let in. |

Hey americandesi1987 after the event can you please report back here how Midnight Magic went?
P.S. Tell us who the cameo NBA star was but bad idea to mention classified info like where he lives. |

GoUCI: I'll definitely get up here tomorrow afternoon or so and let you know how it went. I'm sure turn-out is going to CRAZY. On another thread posted
on our board about the Midnight Magic article from the LA Times, Douglass' is quoted as saying Midnight Magic is going to be after the concerts...so
here's to hoping people don't take off once the concerts are over and done with.
In any case, i'll let you guys know. P.S. There were couple different emails sent out to all students: one by the guy in charge or athletic advertising or w/e his title is. the other from "student affairs" and this email said its a special VIDEO cameo, while the other says its a Special cameo (inferring an in-person appearance). Anyways, i'll let you guys know! |

So Shocktoberfest as a whole was a HUGE success....sold-out crowd (about 6K probably, counting people in the "mosh pit" on the floor).
As far as Midnight Magic is concerned I was very impressed with the presentation and I do realize that that is the most important part of the whole event. Presentation. Not how many 3's you can make or determining any skill level. Sheer publicity is the goal and it was achieved. The court was half-court only as the other half was used for the stage for performers and the mosh pit. Women won the 3-point contest (destroyed the Men's team: Brett Lauer, Adam Folker, and Chad DeCasas shot for the Men...as expected Brett was pretty money (about 60%) while Folker seemed to choke (maybe a little unfair because he may have been a little rusty), Chad was OK..started slow and finished strong). The highlight of the night in terms of Basketball, in my mind, was by far the Dunk Contest. Participants were Darren Moore, Derrick Strings, Ryan Staker, and Zack Atkinson...Darren Moore showed off some nice hops (he had a good windmill warm-up dunk and he missed his Second and the replacement). Strings was OK nothing too flashy. Staker was impressive because of the sheer power he threw it down with...nothing very flash but ridiculous power (I guess that fits his "banger" description). Atkinson was amazing. Again, no exaggerations; he was AMAZING. His athleticism is all that we've heard and some more. His rumored 40" vertical is probably closer to 36-38 ish. He had an OK warm-up 360 dunk. Second dunk was great: 360, Vince Carter with his Arm in the rim. Third was probably the best dunk I have personally seen: he got Darren Moore to sit on a chair in front of the basket while Patrick Rembert ran up in front of him with the ball and threw him an alley-oop off the board which he finished with good power while jumping over Moore. Atkinson definitely caught the attention of some of my non-UCI basketball following friends...all in all i'll call this night a great success. |

Sounds like it was a good time. I heard that the special cameo star was Kobe Bryant...on a video. Better than a cardboard cutout, but a mannequin wearing a
Lakers jersey would have done just as well.

I second the gratitude for the report. Part of me was a little upset that I was not going to be able to see Midnight Magic, but when it comes down to it, I am
already a diehard. If this student only event could help create a few more diehards that might not have been otherwise, then I would gladly give up my
opportunity to see the first practice of the season.
I found two aspects of the report particularly encouraging. First, the Atkinson stuff obviously. It is nice to be able to confirm previous reports of his athleticism. An earlier poster asked about the last time that we had a real athlete at the center position. I will take it a bit further, I can't remember the last time we had a real "athlete" type at all. In my mind, Sanders was more of a jumper than an athlete, and aside from him, I can't think of anyone. Secondly, it was nice to hear that Darren Moore is feeling good enough to participate in the dunk contest. As we all know, he hurt his knee during the summer, and it is a relief to hear that he will likely avoid missing any significant time. Lastly, a question for Desi. How many people were there during the Midnight Magic part of the evening. You said that there may have up to 6,000, but were they only there during the concert portions, or during the basketball as well. If there were 6,000 people there watching the basketball portion, then I would say that is definitely a resounding success. D |

Well I'd call it good management/scheduling the events of the night on part of UCI Athletics and ASUCI. They conveniently scheduled Midnight Magic in
between Matt Costa (a smaller rocker, Jack Johnson-esque) and Three 6 Mafia (the obvious headliner). So I can safely say about 4,500-5000 students were
probably watching the Midnight Magic part of the event. Even though I think most came out to see Three 6 Mafia, they had no choice but to watch the
"promotion/advertisement" of UCI Basketball (never a bad thing!). I did hear a few negative remarks from some kids standing by me when there were a
few missed 3's or missed dunks. But besides that, for the most part I think most people who watched the entire Midnight Magic (probably 20 minutes tops)
were entertained at the very least. If we can get even 30-40 more regular attendees at the home games, I would say thats a job well done. (note that its not
that I have low expectations from the student body, I'm just saying a regular 30-40 more people "in CIA" at the games means thats 30-40 more loud
voices.... if it makes sense to anybody, I'm thinking the 30-40 more consistent attendees translates to probably about attendence going up by 100 or more
per game [word of mouth, roomates, apathetic friends
I am definitely a dedicated UCI Athletics and more importantly a UCI Basketball fan. For me the event was a nice confirmation of cautious optimism that I have for this year. Hopefully the presentation, production, and headline events put up by ASUCI and UCI Athletics will help increase support (which should be a given seeing the huge increase in new students....you should come out to Ring Road at noon and see for yourself. Barely any room to walk. Pretty crazy IMO). Can't wait till the exhibition game vs. Pomona. Also, I have been talking to some guy whos on the CIA "board" and he told me the new Athletics promotions guy, Nick Coromelas, was talking about possibly arranging a Bus for the USC game if they can garner enough response. I'll try to keep you updated on that. P.S. If some of you read the article about USC and UCLA canceling their Midnight Madness programs this year, you may have read a little note that said USC has lost 3 or 4 of their last Season Openers. Here's to hoping UCI continues that trend!

P.S. The NBA Star appearance was indeed Kobe. Although I expected it, I was slightly disappointed. I couldn't really catch what he said but, standing in
front of a UCI Athletics banner (presumably at Crawford), he said something to the effect of " .... Go Anteaters" (you couldn't really hear much
in the "mosh pit" portion on the floor by the stage).

Kobe & college | #20 | ||
|
In the past the college I would associate with Kobe Bryant was UCLA. When Kobe first became a Laker he lived in Pacific Palisades and would play summer
pick-up games at UCLA. Kobe even took some Italian summer classes at UCLA.
But now that's officially changed. After seeing that Midnight Magic video the new college I associate with Kobe Bryant is now UC Irvine. What would have made that great cameo better?...I would have loved to have seen Kobe in an Eater Nation or CIA t-shirt. Maybe next year.
